Concentrated declines, distributed growth, and the challenges of balancing the green energy transition in the US

01-16-2026

image

Author summary In this research, we examine how the U.S. transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy is reshaping the geography of energy production. By analyzing longitudinal energy production data across the contiguous United States from 2004 to 2021, we demonstrate a significant shift from regionally concentrated fossil fuel production to more widely distributed renewable energy generation. Less than one-third of current wind and solar generation occurs in regions previously specialized in fossil fuel extraction. This geographic mismatch challenges the idea that green energy development will replace declining fossil fuel industries in affected communities. Our analysis suggests that successful energy transition policies must address both this spatial restructuring and its socioeconomic implications. We argue for nuanced, place-based approaches that combine worker protections, economic diversification strategies, and community engagement to ensure an equitable transition. This research provides insights for policymakers working to balance climate goals with concerns for equity and community resiliency.
